Mazol Connection
June 2025
| | | Message from Ill Sir Laurence Pike | |
Nobles, we are close to some good weather and a busy summer. First off, I would like to thank the Nobles of Mazol for a great Installation weekend, It was great to see such a large turnout. I think those who attended had a wonderful time. Lady Helen was impressed with the turnout of ladies at her luncheon and hoped all enjoyed the event.
All Nobles should be aware, by now, that this is a special year for our Canadian Shriners Hospital in Montreal. 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the hospital. The kick-off celebration was held in Montreal with a Zoom to Temples and Clubs. The event was well attended at the Mazol Shrine Center with Nobles and two of our patients in attendance.
Our Oriental Guide and High Priest and Prophet completed their Oriental Guide training in Tampa, and both were very impressed with the quality of the training. This training is required to progress along the line to Potentate.
In April, Chief Rabban and I attended the Northeast Shrine Association Spring meeting in Summerside, PEI. All Temples in the Northeast were represented at the meeting, and planning was done for the Fall Field Days to be held in Summerside, September 25 to 28. The registration form for this event is posted on the Mazol Shriners webpage. Nobles are encouraged to attend this weekend of fun. I’m sure a good time will be had by all.
May 2 and 3rd had us doing visits to the Boot Shrine Club and Clarenville Shrine Club. A Stated Meeting was held in Clarenville with a very good turnout of Nobles. Unfortunately, Lady Helen took a fall when returning to the hotel and fractured her pelvis and a bone in her hand. She is recovering nicely and would like to thank the clubs and ladies for the numerous phone calls. Hopefully, she will be back in shape for our official visit to Tunis Temple in June. We were unable to attend the Hospital Seminar and official visit to Karnak Temple, due to her injury. I would like to thank our Recorder and Assistant Rabban for filling in on short notice.
We have two club visits scheduled for June 13 and 14 with Lewisporte and Gander. Looking forward to meeting the Nobles from those clubs and addressing any concerns that they may have.
June 28 to 3 July are the dates for the Imperial Session in Atlanta, Georgia. I am pleased to say that Chief Rabban and I will be accompanied by Noble Owen Devereaux, Grand Master Grand Lodge of NL, at this Communication. It has been a few years since Mazol has had the privilege of hosting our Grand Master, and we are looking forward to his company.
August 8 and 9 are the dates for our Summer Ceremonial, which will be held in Gander. The Ceremonial is hosted jointly by the Lewisporte and Gander Clubs. Registration information is available on the Mazol website. A Stated Meeting, First and Second sections, and a Ladies luncheon are planned, and a banquet on Saturday evening. There will also be a parade on Saturday afternoon, Clubs are encouraged to bring along their parade vehicles and join in.
I would also like to take this opportunity to invite any nobles and their ladies who would like to join us on club visits to come along. It is an opportunity to meet up with old friends and get a perspective on how other clubs do their business. We will be putting out an email before these visits to inform the Nobility of the details.
Our office administrator and web master have made some significant updates to our web page. The Members Only section now has several documents that will assist Club executives in carrying out their tasks. I would encourage all to have a look and give us some feedback; any suggestions for improvements that would enhance this area will be greatly appreciated.
Lady Helen and I wish all a great summer and hope the weather cooperates. Tight lines.
Yours in the faith

Seminar & Hospital Experience | | | | |
As a Shriner, it is imprinted in my mind and soul that our network of nonprofit hospitals provides help to children with many different conditions: orthopedic, spinal cord injuries, cleft lip and palate, and of course, burns. In my day-to-day activities, fulfilling my Shrine Club obligations, I did not see the big picture of what the Shriners Hospitals for Children truly did until my good lady, Heather, and I visited Montreal to participate in the Shriners Hospital Seminar on May 15-16, 2025.
The PTF is the main focus of local shrine clubs, and we are all aware of the coordination needed for the transportation and living accommodations needed by the patient/family. Little discussion centers on the other needs of our Shriners patients: education, social services, psychology, nutrition, nursing, surgery units, rehabilitation, and research, etc. Over the two-day seminar, we heard from members of the hospital’s multidisciplinary teams on how they work as ‘one’ to benefit their patients. Testimonials from patients and families were presented to further demonstrate the positive results of their dedication. Heather and I were both impressed by the family care approach taken by all hospital staff in the positive development of physical, social, and emotional aspects of the patient/family. The built-in workshops during the two days (in hospital units) gave us insight into the patients’ lives and supported how the teams worked together. Research has to be a major investment at our hospital to better understand the cause, how to prevent, and how to treat the conditions the patients present to us. Heather and I were both fascinated with the presentations on the research areas, especially Genetic and Metabolic Bone Disease.
To Emmanuelle Rondeau, Director of Business Development and Shrine liaison, and to all who coordinated the seminar, with a sincere thank you for making the event a memorable experience.

Well, it seems like summertime is arriving once again, and as we all say, time flies when we are having fun, and fun is what we all love to have.
I’m happy to say our ladies have had another busy and fun winter and spring. We started in January at the Installation of our new Potentate. IILS Sir Lawrence Pike and Lady Helen. It was a wonderful day and evening celebrating the start of a new year filled with promise and hope.
The ladies had a very successful Spring Tea. It’s always a lot of work for us, but it’s all worth it as the money we raise allows us to donate financially to our wonderful Shriners children who are dear to our hearts.
| | | |
The ladies had so many laughs and so much fun at a Paint night under the very patient guidance of Noble Les Noseworthy. We all tried very hard to duplicate his sketch however, I doubt any of our artwork will end up in the Louvre LOL! But was it ever fun!
2025 has been a year of very positive change for our Center. Under the guidance of our newly formed MSC Board, there are many changes happening. The building and outlying buildings will be transformed by fresh paint, new steps, and accessible ramps. All these upgrades will provide a greater number of bookings to increase the profitability of the Center, not to mention it will be a beautiful building that Shriners can proudly call home. The solidarity and positive outlook from all the Clubs across Newfoundland and Labrador will ensure the success of all our endeavors. When we all work together towards a common goal, success is assured.
All of us must always remember that the children are the reason why we are here and do what we do.
On behalf of the Ladies of the Sabre, I wish you all a wonderful and safe summer filled with happiness and love spent with family and friends.
Lady Paula Dingle
President, Ladies of the Sabre

Canadian Hospital 100th
Anniversary Celebration Kickoff!
| |
Since 1925, Shriners Hospitals have transformed the lives of thousands of children through specialized care and the dedication of their incredible teams.
On February 18th. at our Montreal Hospital, we saw the kickoff of a year-long celebration of Shriners Hospitals for Children in Canada.
Throughout the day, patients, families, Shriners, and staff enjoyed festive activities.
A press event was held at the Hospital and joined online by Temples from coast to coast. This milestone occasion featured inspiring patient ambassadors who have been treated at the hospital. The hospital showcased the stories of patient ambassadors like Jani Barré and Luca "Lazylegz" Patuelli, who have been significantly impacted by the hospital's care.
The anniversary is not just a celebration of the past but also a promise to continue changing lives for generations to come.
Later this year, there will be a 100th Anniversary Gala at Le Salon Richmond featuring live entertainment, a lucrative silent auction, and spirited games. The Gala will be a tribute to the 100 years of dedication, hope, and healing.

National Volunteer Week is April 27 to May 3, 2025. This week is set aside each year to recognize and thank volunteers for the time and energy they contribute to causes that benefit our communities. It is also an opportunity to promote the benefits of volunteering to individuals and society.
Over 210,000 individuals in Newfoundland and Labrador volunteer an average of 161 hours per year with 3,400 incorporated non-profits and 3000 plus informal community groups.
Each volunteer contribution, big or small, creates momentum and has the power to influence and inspire, joining a wave of positive change. And it is appropriate to our connection with the sea, building on the tides sent out before us, waves swell with each generation of volunteers. Our actions ripple out to broader community benefits, like improved well-being, increased social cohesion, and enhanced resilience in the face of change and uncertainty.

Alex is a young patient from New Brunswick who just completed a 90-day stay at the Montreal Shrine Hospital. During his stay, Alex was accompanied by both his mom and Grandmother and he and his family became very good friends with the nurses and staff at our hospital – he knew everyone, and everyone knew Alex.
Across the street from the Hospital construction is underway for two new buildings. As typical for a young boy, Alex was fascinated by the work being done and every day, you could find Alex out on the Observation Balcony on the 6th floor watching the two construction cranes working away.
One day, an employee from our Shrine Hospital contacted the foreman at the Construction Site and told them Alex was excited to watch the progress from the balcony, especially to see the cranes and the many workers.
| | | |
|
Shortly thereafter, the foreman and another employee came to the hospital to meet Alex and answer any questions he might have for them. To Alex's surprise, the Construction employees decided to have a sign made and attached to the side of the crane for everyone to see. Alex was overjoyed by what they had done to recognize him.
When the day came for Alex to return home to Moncton, the employees on the Construction Site came to visit with Alex and presented him with a souvenir of his time engaged with the construction happening before his eyes. It was a wonderful moment that left Alex and his family full of joy!
Many thanks to Ill. Sir Blaine Brooks of Luxor Temple for this uplifting article.
